VanceS: isn't it amazing?
GrahamS: I'm going now
DafneG joined the room.
NickyGst4: a split personality!
DafneG: hi everybody
CarlaA: hi all

RitaZ hugs dear Daf
GrahamS: OK everyone, I think I should start
DafneG hugs Rita
GrahamS: I'd first like to welcome you all and thankyou
for coming today
ElizabethH joined the room.
MoiraH: I'm very proud of myself - I'm getting quite
good at this "chaos navigation" :)
GrahamS: It would be nice if everyone could say
who they are and give us abrief introduction
DafneG: good, Moira
ChrisJ left the room.
GrahamS: I'll start. I'm Graham Stanley and I teach
EFL in Barcelona, Spain, teaching both young learners at an academy and university
undergraduates of Tourism.
PerryGst5 joined the room.
AbdelmajiB joined the room.
ElizabethH: Hi all--others will be arriving--I couldn't
get in at first. And it is startled not to hear your voices!
GrahamS: It is strange going from live audio to
silence, Elisabeth, isn't it?
ElizabethH: I'm in Sacramento, CA where the sun
has just risen. I work primarily online, and design software and Web-based stuff.
NickyGst4: ok. I'm Nicky Hockly - I do teacher training
online, based in Barcelona Spain
DafneG: Dafne in Caracas, Venezuela. I teach ESP

GrahamS: Great to meet you all - a mixture of old
faces and new
NickyGst4: old as in you know us right! ;-)
MoiraH: Moira Hunter in France, teaching ESP to
graduate students and working adults both f2f and online, recently a lot of
realtime online teaching
GrahamS: That's right Nicky :)
PaulaRE joined the room.
GrahamS: So, today I’m going to be talking
about interactive listening mazes (ilm).
PaulaRE: Hey Graham and everyone!
GrahamS: Hi Paula, we're just starting
JaneAP left the room (signed off).
JaneAP joined the room.
GrahamS: The idea for ilm came to me when I was
thinking of ways to combine podcasting with store-telling, although it's really
an adaptation of an old efl chestnut.
GrahamS: I remembered the traditional reading mazes,
which I’m sure that many of you have come across.
GrahamS: Has anyone had any experience of using
reading mazes with students? Either in class or online?
JoannMi: Quandary
VanceS: reading mazes yes
GrahamS: Originally designed to be used as choose-your-own
adventure type activities on cards in class, they have been successfully adapted
by many to the Web.
NickyGst4: reading yes
GrahamS: If you have any URLs, please share them
with us today
MoiraH: reading mazes yes and listening mazes in
the language lab but difficult to set up
GrahamS: Why's that Moira?
GrahamS: Difficult to create?
MoiraH: old language lab - audio K7s and perhaps
the way we did it :(
GrahamS: I see
MagaGst6 joined the room.
GrahamS: A few years ago, I created some reading
mazes with students: http://www.grahamstanley.com/englishfortourism/units/010/mazes.html
ElizabethH: Had my middle school teachers use them
in their classes.
GrahamS: I really enjoyed the experience, and they
seemed to get a lot out of it too
PaulaRE: What happens if I click on the link..:)
relatively new user to TI here
JaneAP left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: That's why I decided to do something similar,
but with voice.
ElizabethH: Paula--it will open in a new browser
window
GrahamS: My interactive listening maze can be found
here: http://ilm-travel.blogspot.com
PaulaRE: Thanks Elizabeth!
GrahamS: I'll give those of you who haven't already
done so some time to visit the weblog and take a look at the maze
GrahamS: At the moment it is a work in progress
and only nine of the sections have been completed!
JeffLe joined the room.
GrahamS: Hi Jeff
ElizabethH: Paula--be sure to close windows as you
go along, or you may get overload.
DianaJH joined the room.
GrahamS: People are taking a look at my interactive
listening maze: http://ilm-travel.blogspot.com
AbdelmajiB left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: Once you’ve taken a look at the maze,
you may want to listen to an explanation of the way I went about getting my
students involved in writing the store in class...
DianaJH left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: oops..story
DafneG listening
ElizabethH: Graham--you could use the "embed"
command to keep the user on the same page as they listen (opens a controller
on the page)
PaulaRE left the room (signed off).
PaulaRE joined the room.
NickyGst4 left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: That's right Elisabeth - I had problems
with that yesterday, and the audio was playing at double speed, so I switched
NickyGst4 joined the room.
GrahamS: but I will change that soon - I'm sorry
I didn't have time to do it for today
ElizabethH: I love the concept!!
NickyGst4 left the room (signed off).
ElizabethH: This is such fun!
NickyGst4 joined the room.
GrahamS: You can listen to my explanation of how
I went about preparing the ilm with my class here: http://interactivelisteningmazes.blogspot.com/
GrahamS: Click on the section of audio you are interested
in to hear the explanation.
RobertWB joined the room.
DafneG agrees with elizabeth
GrahamS: Hi elderbob
DafneG waves hi to e-bob
RobertWB: Hello all.
GrahamS: People are listening to explanations here:
http://interactivelisteningmazes.blogspot.com/
RuthVGst9 joined the room.
RuthVGst9: Hi!
ElizabethH: This is definitely a cool application.
GrahamS: Hi Ruth, the interactive listening maze
is here: http://ilm-travel.blogspot.com
GrahamS: Thanks Elisabeth
ElizabethH: You could also have students make the
mazes for each other, once they get the idea.
RuthVGst9: Thanks, and the sound is at WorldBridges?
GrahamS: That's a great idea
GrahamS: Ruth, there's no live sound as I have lots
of asynchronous sound to listen to
GrahamS: http://interactivelisteningmazes.blogspot.com/
PaulaRE: Graham- I had to switch to my laptop- my
popup blocker was limiting use on my desk top. Can you give me the maze link
again. sorry....
ElizabethH: Paula--You can click back here and type
while you listen, too.
JoannMi left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: Sure, Paula : http://ilm-travel.blogspot.com
GrahamS: http://interactivelisteningmazes.blogspot.com/
(for explanations)
GrahamS: I am happy with the idea behind ilm, but
am not so sure of the result this time - the story is a little confusing.
GrahamS: The next time I do this, I am going to
create my own first, as an example to the students.
VanceS: Here's a simple reading maze I have used
(you asked us to share and I just found it) http://www.normandcompany.com/SM1GAME/newsplash.html
PaulaRE: Very Cool!!
VanceS: the home page is unfortunate
GrahamS: Thanks Vance - it looks good
ElizabethH: Yes--in tourism, students would have
to imagine several problems and their potential outcomes.
ElizabethH: Very good critical thinking activity.
VanceS: but there are 5 murder mysteries there if
you can handle the posters
GrahamS: pity about the posters
PaulaRE: Paula clearing her throat..lol
GrahamS: The activity went down really well in class
DianaJH joined the room.
DianaJH: great idea Graham
GrahamS: The students were very into it - I was
ready to stop it if they looked like they were getting bored, but we went on
til the end of the class
GrahamS: Thanks Diana
MoiraH: How long did it take to create from scratch?
TapioH left the room.
GrahamS: I went into class with blank pieces of
paper Moira
DianaJH: re you going to explain how you did this?
Iam new to blogs and pods
GrahamS: And the students wrote the first scenario
in pairs on separate pieces of paper...
GrahamS: Diana, can you listen to the files here:
http://interactivelisteningmazes.blogspot.com
GrahamS: Then they switched pieces of paper
DianaJH: yes i listened to the travel one twice.
GrahamS: And so we continued - We ended up with
the beginnings of lots of different stories
ChrisJ joined the room.
GrahamS: Hi Chris
ChrisJ: Hi, Chris,
GrahamS: http://interactivelisteningmazes.blogspot.com/
TapioH joined the room.
ChrisJ: I'll be in and out. I'm helping people in
the Reception.
ChrisJ left the room.
RobertWB: Have you thought about using flickr
photos with a javascrip rollover with sound and text
GrahamS: The day after the students had written
the stories, they chose one and we recorded it
GrahamS: That's a good idea elderbob
MagaGst6 left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: Have you tried this out?
SedatA joined the room.
RobertWB: I have been playing with it...no examples
yet.
GrahamS: Hi Sedata
SedatA: hi Graham
SedatA: and the others
GrahamS: please let me know when you have something
RobertWB: But a phot with a room of clues, then
rollover linnks to your audios and displayed text clues.....great options.
RobertWB: Or a google map?
GrahamS: Sedata, http://ilm-travel.blogspot.com
is the site where the maze is
GrahamS: sounds great Bob - I'll look into that
definitely
RobertWB: So many toys....so little time.
MoiraH: sounds very complicated :-(
GrahamS: ...adn http://interactivelisteningmazes.blogspot.com/
has some info / audio about how I went about it with my students
RobertWB: I love the simplicity of this blog site.
GrahamS: thanks Bob
GrahamS: It shows you that you can use a blog without
the journalling facilities
MoiraH: yes, it's very nice to look at and go through
GrahamS: journal-type facilities
GrahamS: I took out all the code related to dates
and archives
GrahamS: And just made 24 posts
TapioH left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: Then there's a link to my loudblog (http://www.loudblog.de)
site, http://www.pod-efl.com
(where the audio files are hosted)
RobertWB: These would also be interesting in a tree
type exercise in Moodle.
GrahamS: That sounds good Bob - keep the ideas coming!
RobertWB: That way, the students could make mistakes
and be taken to a mistake audio to explain why they made a wrong choice, then
an opportunity to back and choose again.
ChrisJ joined the room.
GrahamS: The advantage of putting them on a blog
is that i) it's free, ii) it's easy to set up and use ii) it's free-standing
RobertWB: In the Blogs, (Ive only had a cursory
glance so far), did the students respond by making comments tothe posts?
GrahamS: I'd like to see how you could do that Bob
(I've not had much experience with Moodle...
RobertWB: Graham, we'll get totether and explore
that sometime.
GrahamS: Bob, that's the idea, but we just finished
doing this a week ago, so the students haven't had time to look at them yet
RobertWB: We have a couple of moodles we can play
in.
ElizabethH: I wonder if the shout-outs in Frappr
could hold a clickable address, so you could roll over, get a shoutout and then
click to go to another country?
GrahamS: definitely Bob - I'd be happy to look into
it
RobertWB: Elizabeth, I think if it will hold a java
script anything will work.
GrahamS: Using Frappr
makes you thin of all sorts of possibilites, Elisabeth, doesn't it?
RobertWB: Anything is possible with open source.
GrahamS: The other thing that I would like to do
is to deliver an ilm as a podcast – I think it would be posible to prepare
one so that it is suitable to download and listen on a portable listening device
(mp3 player, pda, etc)
RobertWB: The frapper
comment is a js...and so is the photo comment map on Flickr.
ElizabethH: I saw some software that did this very
same activity with video. a more elaborate touch.
RobertWB: its all the same technology....same on
Google or MSN
maps.
ElizabethH: I love Frappr!
GrahamS: And then, Id like to set up something similar
with a webquest (I thought about calling it a podquest)
ElizabethH: It is so going to uncomplicate making
Intro pages in EVO!
SharonHo joined the room.
RobertWB: Terrific possiblitiles...
PaulaRE: Podquest- that has a lovely ring to it!
RobertWB: Wouldnt that be great Elizabeth.
RobertWB: Podquest...I love it.
GrahamS: I know, that's why I'd like to try it!
ElizabethH: In the software, the user listening
to the response and then selected a text answer, which was then enacted in the
subsequent video.
ElizabethH: Ewww, Paula--you have a knack for good
naming!
DafneG: I like the podquest idea :-)
PaulaRE: lol
GrahamS: If anyone would like to try recording a
comment and uploading it to www.pod-efl.com,
please feel free
ElizabethH: Paula--you must add this into your WebQuest
EVO somewhere.
GrahamS: http://www.pod-efl.com
PaulaRE: Elizabeth- that was a Graham idea!
PaulaRE: Great idea!
RobertWB: Graham how did you upload the audios.
ElizabethH: At this very moment, jack and I are
discussing getting an iPod cum phone.
GrahamS: Paula, let's see who's first to nab the
domain name!
PaulaRE: I'm amazed at how interlinked many of the
evo sessions are!
ElizabethH: But I suppose you can record at your
site with cell phone or Skype, Graham?
RobertWB: They are EVOlutionary.
GrahamS: Bob, I have server space and uploaded them
using Dreamweaver
PaulaRE: It's all yours Graham! I still have to
learn podcasting and many more things!
MoiraH: I'm just listening to your invitation to
use this with our own students and I'd love to!!
GrahamS: I have tried recording Skype
with hot recorder
RobertWB: THere is also a new piece of Skype
related software...Pamela,...that says you can Skype
comments directly to a blog.
GrahamS: Moira, I'd love you to do so too
RobertWB: I have it installed, but I havent had
time to get it all set up yet.
CarlaA: where can we get pamela?
GrahamS: It would be very motivating for my students
to see that something they have written and recorded is being used and responded
to by other students
DongC joined the room.
MoiraH: I teach electronic and microelectronic engineering
students and they'd go to town here :)
RobertWB: Hang on Carla and Ill get the addie.
CarlaA: graham, i'm in brazil. I'll see if i can
record my students to reply to yours
DongC bows to all.
GrahamS: Hot recorder http://www.hotrecorder.com/
is free to use, but you have to pay for a registered copy if you want the
converters to mp3
GrahamS: That sounds great Carla
RobertWB: So far Pamela is beta...but its from the
same people that brought out SKype. It is not freeware,
but 2-.-- for life for the professional versiion
CarlaA: thanks. i'll take a look.
RobertWB: Sorry, 20 USD
GrahamS: Please feel free anyone to get your students
to add to the story using the audio upload
GrahamS: Hi dong
GrahamS: There are 2 URLs you need to look at to
get the most of this session: 1) http://interactivelisteningmazes.blogspot.com/
ElizabethH: Have to head out for breakfast, but
thanks so much Graham, for a really neat concept and great presentation of it!
I'll be exploring these sites later.
GrahamS: and 2) http://ilm-travel.blogspot.com
GrahamS: Glad you enjoyed it Elisabeth
GrahamS: Have a great breakfast
PaulaRE: Have a great day Elizabeth!
ElizabethH: I'm leaving the interface open here
in TI in order to get the whole transcript on my computer.
ElizabethH: Cheers--Eliz
DongC: HI,GrahamS.I am yaodong from China.I was
with Randall in LT room for the last 5 minutes of his session.
DafneG: I love the idea, Graham, thanks :-)
GrahamS: Thanks Dafne
RobertWB left the room (signed off).
SedatA: it was really nice Graham
JeffC joined the room.
SedatA: thanks for the presentation
GrahamS: I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone
may have about this
NickyGst4: thanks Graham - good stuff! :-)
SedatA left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: Thanks Nicky, Sedata
JeffC: Graham... could you email me a transcript
of this?
PaulaRE: This was amazing Graham! It makes me all
the more excited to start exploring podcasting and other tools. Thank you!!
JeffC just woke up.
NickyGst4 left the room (signed off).
JeffC: or better still... post it here.
DongC: Graham, hope to see you next time in LT room
soon.
GrahamS: Certainly Jeff - in fact. I was going tp
upload it and link it to the blog
RobertWB joined the room.
GrahamS: I'll post it at TI too
JeffC: even better Graham
ChrisJ: Thanks
MoiraH: I have too many questions. Thank you for
this presentation. It was really great
RobertWB: The Pamela
software is at: http://pamela-systems.com/products/
CarlaA: thanks, bog
CarlaA: bob, sorry!
GrahamS: I'm happy you found it intersting Paula
- I'm looking forward to more interaction about audio and podcasts at the
EVO ELT Podcasting session - it's great to get ideas and feedback from everybody
GrahamS: Thaks for coming Moira
RobertWB: Terrific collaborative stuff.
IsmailF joined the room.
DianaJH: I will listen again later and maybe have
questions then. Its all very exciting Graham. Thank you.
GrahamS: We have ten miutes left - I'd be happy
to answer questions or talk about other projects I am involved in, audio-wise
if you like?
DianaJH left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: Or if people prefer to take a coffee break
before the next session than that's fine too (actually I think it may even start
at 17:50. Is that right?)
ChrisJ: No, it starts at 7:00
VanceS checking "good question"
DennisOl joined the room.
DennisOl left the room (signed off).
VanceS: tere is at Alado at 1700 GMT
GrahamS: OK, then we are fine for time
VanceS: and nice thing about this session is folks
can be here AND with Tere
ChrisJ: Oops,17:00
RobertWB: Im off to alado then....I like to sit
on the front row.
CarlaA: could you include the link here, vance.
so we could go straigth?
RobertWB: Awesome job, Graham.
VanceS: the chairs with the ribbons are for dignitaries bob
SharonHo: Hi, sorry that I missed everything. Is
JeffC going to post the transcript here in the office?
DongC: i am trying too.first timer in alado,Vance.
GrahamS: Yes Sharon
SharonHo: Thanks, now I forgive you for drinking
all of the wine last night ;-)
VanceS: if someone would make a web page from it
I'd be happy to put it on my site if permitted
VanceS: or link to it, better
GrahamS: If you keep an eye on http://ilm-travel.blogspot.com
and http://interactivelisteningmazes.blogspot.com/
there'l be links there too
PaulaRE left the room (signed off).
CarlaA: could you say something about your other
project audio-wise, graham?
RobertWB left the room (signed off).
VanceS: ok, will do
GrahamS: What about if I upload it Vance, and send
you the link?
VanceS: perfect Graham
GrahamS: http://themetourism.blogspot.com
is one of the other audio projects I run with a tourism class
JoelB left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: It's a short (9 session) content course
in English
VanceS: This might be a good time for me to head
home since I can't hear at alado
VanceS: though it's probably simulcast
GrahamS: and I also work on helping students write
reports
GrahamS: The assessment for the course is to produce
a 3 minute (or so) audio report
GrahamS: This is what you can hear on the site
ChrisJ left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: I have received around 15 reports now .
we recorded a lot of them in class on the last day of the course
GrahamS: I plan to podcast one or two a week, and
am promoting the site as a travel podcast to try and get a real audience for
my students
GrahamS: There'll be another 15 reports in Januray,
and another 15 in February, so I can run the site as a regular podcast
GrahamS: The studetns who have had their reports
uploaded are quite pleased - especially as the site is getting listened to from
people form al over
MoiraH left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: (my typing is getting worse)
CarlaA: i'm listening to it now! it's great.
CarlaA: now, can i ask a very dumb question...?
How do you add the podcast to the blogger.
GrahamS: There's quite a buzz at the university
about it now, so I'm pleased
GrahamS: It's not a dumb question, Carla - it's
totally separate - I upload it to another site and just create a link to it
CarlaA: you own site?
GrahamS: You can upload audio for free at http://www.ourmedia.org
GrahamS: I use my own site, however: http://www.pod-efl.com
CarlaA: oh, yes! I have an account there. So I just
need to upload it there and then link it to the blogger?
GrahamS: Another way of doing it would be to use
a site like elgg: http://www.elgg.net
that allows you to upload files
GrahamS: That's right Carla - I just use the code
<a href="myfile.mp3"><img scrc="podcastimage.jpg"></a>,
substituting the filenames for an mp3 file, and the jpg for that 'podcast logo
- and then, hey presto!
SusanBat joined the room.
GrahamS: I've not rtried elgg
for podcasting, but it does have possibilities - and the ability to connect
to other students through FOAF and communities (with its own wiki) is great
GrahamS: the filespace islimited, but it is possible
SusanBat: I'm confused. How do I enter Alado--where
can I register
CarlaA: thanks, graham. When i post my students'
experience as dJs I recorded yesterday, i'll send you the link!!!
PerryGst5 left the room (signed off).
GrahamS: sounds great Carla - looking forward to
it
JeffC: Go here Carla: http://www.alado.net/webheads
JeffC: Just type in your name and enter... no password.
SusanBat: okay I'll try
GrahamS: Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to put the kettle on and make a cuppa' (it's time for tea)
